Real stories from seniors and youth whose lives have been transformed by our programs.
"ISYU changed my life."
- Fatima's Journey
When Fatima arrived in Seattle from Somalia three years ago, she felt alone. At 68 years old, she didn't speak much English, her husband had passed away, and her children lived far away. She spent most of her days at home, feeling isolated and helpless.
That changed when a neighbor told her about Immigrant Seniors and Youth United. "The first day I came to the center, I met other Somali women. We talked in our language, we laughed, we shared stories. I felt like I had found my family again," Fatima recalls.
Through ISYU's health and wellness program, Fatima joined weekly exercise classes and learned about nutrition. "I used to eat whatever was convenient. Now I understand how to eat healthy, and I have the energy to play with my grandchildren," she says with a smile.
Today, Fatima is a volunteer mentor, helping other new immigrants adjust to life in America. "When I see someone who feels how I felt, I tell them: come to ISYU. They will help you. You are not alone."
